Culinary Arts students from Fife College may soon know the answer!
Fife College students enjoy their Italian experience!

Thanks to a once in a lifetime trip to Italy the students are learning all about Italy’s finest ingredients from pasta and cheese to wine and coffee!

A group of 23 students flew out to Treviso in Italy just days ago and have already had Italian lessons, visited a cheese factory and watched how to make fresh pasta from the family who invented the Bellini cocktail! The trip is designed to create opportunities for apprentice chefs to improve their skills, enhance their employability and gain cultural awareness.

Fife College applied to the Erasmus+ programme which supports the visit, back in 2016 and was delighted to be awarded funds to take up to 90 students and staff on the food fact-finding trip over the coming weeks.

The programme is being run conjunction with ENAIP and Cerletti Institute in Italy and is funded through a European Union fund. Students taking part in the trip are from the three Fife College campuses where Culinary Arts is taught: St Brycedale in Kirkcaldy; Halbeath in Dunfermline and Levenmouth.

Project co-ordinator Lindsey Robertson said: “We are delighted to have been successful in Erasmus+ which is a fantastic life opportunity for our students to learn and be inspired by Italian food, culture and language.

“We are all super excited to be involved  – we’ve heard loads of positive things back from the trip already and look forward to hearing more about their experiences when they return at the end of the fortnight. We’re certain that this trip will have an enormous positive effect on the students work in College and their confidence giving them the inspiration and drive to do well in the industry, an experience which will remain with them their whole lives.

Bryan McCabe, Director of Business, Enterprise and Tourism at Fife College added: “The UK Catering and Hospitality Industry is keen to attract more cooks with sound knowledge of internationally infused cuisine.

This project, which blends foreign expertise with what students currently learn on their course at Fife College, is the perfect way to help ensure we are producing talented chefs of the future who will have the skills required in this fast-growing competitive industry.”
