Cafe & Farm Shop in St Andrews
The recently established Balgove Larder lies on the Strathtyrum Estate about half a mile from the main western entrance to St Andrews.
It results from the dream of businessman and food lover Will Docker, and is already proving to be a huge attraction for residents, visitors, and the town’s large student population. The concept of building a quality farm shop brand was born in the summer of 2009 to cater for the apparent niche in the St Andrews market and to help generate a greater interest in locally grown, and sourced, seasonal produce.
The buildings, which had served numerous roles including a dairy, grain store and cattle shed, were deteriorating to the extent that they needed to be developed or demolished, and with the aid of SRDP grant funding the development route was chosen. The impressive conversion incorporates as much environmentally responsible thinking as possible.
For example there is over specified insulation, and a solid log boiler to provide hot water and heating. At the heart of the project is the butchery, which is supplied largely by the farm. It specialises in traditional butchery, well hung beef and a variety of game from the farm.
The Balgove Larder also has an extensive farm shop selling a wide range of high quality products, and the busy café serves freshly prepared local produce.
