The popularity of porridge oats exported thousands of miles from the Quaker factory in Cupar to the Middle East and North Africa has once more come to national attention.

The oats are used in stews and soups for the evening meal for fasting Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan, with one dish going by the name “Shorbat Quaker” or Quaker Soup.

Pepsico’s Cupar operation sends around 10,000 tonnes of oats to the region every year, packed in special tins with a shelf life of up to three years.

One example of the export success is Saudi Arabia, which has received Quaker Oats for over half a century.

Between 2006 and 2011 export growth figures for Saudi Arabia  increased by around 20%, with 90% of sales in the three months leading up up to Ramadan
