Passionate cheese lover Svetlana Redpath’s hugely popular Guid Cheese Shop in St Andrews is officially one of the best in the UK.

The shop has been named as among the top five in the country thanks to success in Britain’s Best Cheese Counter Competition.

Svetlana reached the final stages after hosting an in-store promotion for La Gruyere AOC Swiss cheese, and the awards ceremony has just taken place at the BBC Good Food Show in the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. 

She said today that although the shop didn’t come out on top, she had lost to a very worthy competitior.

The winner, she said, was Paxton and Whitfield in London, a cheese shop with a rich 200-year history, a Royal Warrant under their belt, and a no-expense-spared refurbishment.

Svetlana has trained with some of the top cheese makers and purveyors in the world, including Murray’s Cheese Shop, New York’s cheese and speciality foods mecca, and Hervé Mons, France’s top affineur.

Through her travels, she has developed an extensive knowledge of cheese, from cheesemaking to the art of affinage – the art of aging cheese. 

In 2010 Svetlana was invited to join the international panel of judges at the World Cheese Awards. At WCA 2011 she was a Supreme Cheese Judge.

In addition she brought all her knowledge together in her first cheese book, called  Cheese: The Connoisseur’s Handbook, which was published two years ago in Russia.
