St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese Co.

Farm Shop, Cafe, in East Neuk of Fife

St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese Company has its home at Falside, where the Stewart family have farmed for over 50 years.

The dairy has always been central to the business, and now Anster’ cheese is hand-made on the farm – to a traditional recipe – by Jane Stewart, using unpasteurised milk from her husband Robert’s herd of home-bred Holstein Friesian cows. Jane decided that cheese seemed an obvious option for Falside at a time when nobody else in Fife was making cheese from their own milk, and there was demand for locally produced food.

By late 2007 the farm had a wonderful new building to house the cheese dairy, complete with a viewing gallery and coffee shop. In January 2008, the first cheese was born, and ready to sample from 8 weeks old. The award winning range now includes Anster, Red Anster (with garlic and chives) and St Andrews Farmhouse (a cheddar style), and all are available through an increasing number of delicatessens, farm shops and restaurants – both locally and further afield.

Visitors to the farm can watch the cheese being made, in a true ‘try before you buy’ experience. The same care and attention is given to Falside’s home-baking and freshly prepared meals and snacks, and coffee shop customers enjoy the fantastic views down towards Anstruther and the sea. The coffee shop also has a small selection of locally made gifts, crafts and speciality foods – and a large wall space hung with a constantly changing selection of delightful work by local artists.
