FreeFrom Food Awards 2013

Entries expected from all over the UK

Posted by Fife Food Network on 18/09/2012

Entries are being invited for the 2013 FreeFrom Food Awards, which have seen huge growth since their introduction in 2008.

Big manufacturers and smaller food businesses from all over the UK, including a number in Fife with appropriate products, will be eligible to battle it out in 17 different categories.

They could win the right to display special logos on their products and possibly win the overall title for Best FreeFrom Food.

The organisers are expecting over 500 entries, a massive increase over the 50 received in the first year of the competition.

To qualify for the awards foods must be free of at least one, and preferably several, specified ingredients.

There include wheat, gluten, dairy products, eggs, yeast, soya, sugar, which are associated with chronic health problems in some people.

Entries will be judged by a panel of over 50 judges including chefs, freefrom cookery writers, dietitians, nutritionists, food industry professionals, freefrom bloggers, coeliacs, and those living with acute food allergies.

They will be benchmarking products against their non-freefrom equivalents.

Judges will asses the quality of products based on appearance, aroma, texture and flavour; whether they fulfil a really useful purpose for someone on a freefrom diet; whether they are doing something which is really difficult to do in manufacturing terms; their nutritional profile and the clarity and accuracy of their labeling.

Entries can be submitted after September 17, with shortlisting in February and a presentation involving Antony Worral Thomson on April 16.
