Fife success in Food Awards Scotland

Several awards across the Kingdom

Posted by Fife Food Network on 24/08/2015

Some well known Fife businesses have enjoyed success in the Food Awards Scotland scheme organised by Creative Oceanic.

Takeaway of the Year is Cromars, Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year is the Grange Inn, and North East Region Restaurant of the Year is Playfair’s Restaurant and Steakhouse. All three are in St Andrews.

Last year Cromars, which also has a café,  was just one of five UK finalists in the race to be crowned Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition organised by Seafish, and has reached the last 60 in the 2016 contest.

Cromars prides itself in fresh food, hand made and hand cooked in the best traditional way, has a specials board with deals of the day and freshly caught fish, and offers a variety of seafood dishes. Customers are often even able to learn the name of the fishing boat that landed their food.

For Playfair’s the awards ceremony in Glasgow was a family affair, with head chef Duncan McLachlan, his sister and director of marketing Rachel McLachlan (both pictured) and their parents Roy and Eliza - who own the business - all attending the event.

“We were up against some strong competition in our category so were absolutely delighted to win.

“The real icing on the cake for us is that our loyal customers voted for Playfair’s for this award”, said Duncan.

The McLachlans have owned the business since 2003 and Duncan started as head chef in 2012, when the restaurant had a complete renovation.

Playfair’s has gone from strength to strength, gaining the Visit Scotland ‘Taste Our Best’ Award in 2014 and being awarded one rosette in the prestigious AA Rosette scheme earlier this year.

Other Fife award winners included Takeway of the Year, South East – Anstruther Fish Bar; Meat Supplier of the Year - The Buffalo Farm (Kirkcaldy); Caterer of the Year, South East and overall Caterer of the Year - Scott’s Catering Service (Glenrothes); Hotel Restaurant of the Year, South East- Nathaniel’s Restaurant, Craigsanquhar, near Cupar.

Glasgow-based Creative Oceanic organises a range of awards tailored to specific industries and places, including hair and beauty, weddings, retail, and cities.

Apart from providing a platform for recognition of the talent and commercial success of various individuals and businesses, the Food Awards Scotland 2015 also supported an official charity partner, The Well Foundation.

Over £ 1400 was raised for the charity to help it achieve its aim of making a positive difference to the lives of deprived people across the globe by ensuring they have clean and safe drinking water to consume.
